The work, estimated at 19.2 billion won ($18.2 million), reinforces Korea Aerospace’s position as the national rotary-wing specialist. The ministry rejected a competing bid from Korean Air Aerospace, the manufacturing division of the country’s largest airline. The move also increases the likelihood that South Korea will finally put the Korean Attack Helicopter (KAH) into production, with more than 200 units required.

Citat:Concept definition of the KAH is planned to run until the end of 2012, at which time the government should decide whether to undertake full-scale development from 2013-18 at a cost estimated at 570.8 billion won. The cost of development, apparently including concept definition, was previously quoted at 700 billion won; it is unclear why the estimate has fallen, contrary to the usual trend in aerospace programs.

According to earlier estimates based on building 260 KAHs, production would cost 3 trillion won, which at current exchange rates works out to about $11 million per helicopter. The total program value is now forecast at about 12 trillion won, including running costs. The army’s official newspaper now states the required number as more than 200. It was once as high as 274.

Citat:While development is still in its early stages and specifications are likely to evolve as work progresses, IHS Jane's understands that the LAH-AGM will measure approximately 1.7 m long and 150 mm in diameter, with a launch weight of about 35 kg. The weapon will be carried and fired from a lightweight twin-tube launcher, deploying four flip-out rectangular wings at mid-body and four flip-out moving control fins immediately after being launched to engage targets up to 8 km away.

According to Kim Byung Hoon, a senior research engineer at Hanwha's tactical missile systems division, the LAH AGM will carry a tandem warhead developed by ordnance specialist Poongsan capable of defeating explosive reactive armour (ERA), while LIG Nex1 will supply the dual CCD TV and imaging infrared (IIR) seeker which will enable the missile to be operated in fire-and-forget (FOF) mode and in fire, observe and update mode using a fibre-optic datalink.

Kim also pointed out that the LAH-AGM will be capable of lock-on before launch (LOBL) while still in its tube using targeting information from the gunner's Target Acquisition and Designation Sight (TADS), although it will also be able to employ lock-on after launch (LOAL) techniques to defeat targets obscured by terrain masks.
