The presidents of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso signed a charter to create a confederation.
The primary objective of the 1st Summit of the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS, AES in French), attended by the leaders of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, was to adopt a draft document for the creation of the confederation, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAP).
The summit, held in Niamey, is chaired by the leader of Niger, Abdurrahmane Chiani. Presidents Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso and Asimi Goita of Mali are also present.
General Abdourahamane Chiani, Niger's military leader, said on Saturday that the people of his country, along with the people of Mali and Burkina Faso, had "irrevocably turned their backs" on the West African bloc, ECOWAS.

Svi vojnici Bundesvera koji su stacionirani u bazi biće povučeni do 31. avgusta, a nemačka vojna saradnja sa Nigerom će biti okončana, dodalo je ministarstvo.
Slom pregovora označava najnoviji diplomatski pomak Nigera od Zapada otkako je državni udar u julu 2023. zbacio predsednika Mohameda Bazuma i doveo sadašnje vojno rukovodstvo na vlast.
Od tada se Niger okrenuo Rusiji i Iranu i udaljio se od Sjedinjenih Država i bivšeg kolonijalnog vladara Francuske.
Slična promena dogodila se u susednom Maliju i Burkini Faso, kojima na sličan način vladaju vojni lideri i koji su suočeni sa nasiljem džihadističkih grupa.
Krajem maja, Nemačka i Niger su postigli privremeni sporazum kojim se Bundesveru dozvoljava da nastavi sa radom baze vazdušnog saobraćaja u glavnom gradu Nijameju do kraja avgusta.
Ali pregovori o produženju tog sporazuma su propali, posebno zato što osoblje baze više neće imati imunitet od krivičnog gonjenja.
U bazi je u poslednje vreme bilo stacionirano samo 38 vojnika Bundesvera, zajedno sa 33 osoblja iz nemačkih i stranih kompanija.
Posebno je korišćen za operacije evakuacije nemačkih državljana u Africi.

SANDF soldier apparently shot dead in the DRC Citat:Yet another South African National Defence Force (SANDF) fatality has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the latest incident apparently involving a soldier shot to death by unidentified gunmen.
Radio Okapi reported that the South African soldier from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) was killed on the night of Friday 19 July by gunmen near Goma airport. His body was discovered the next morning.
The soldier was apparently dressed in civilian clothes and was returning to his base after visiting a bar/restaurant.
