Citat:So a lot of people have made fun of the fact that KPA Chonma-ho and M2002 MBTs have MANPADS bolted to the back, as can be seen on this Chonma-ho taking part in a military parade.
You can also see the same configuration on the M2002 and on this SPH.
So it turns out that this isn’t just for show, they actually train on it! Here’s a report from a group of military officers visiting from Myanmar describing a Chonma-ho simulator. http://www.dvb.no/uncategorized/military-docs/9279
The North Koreans have proliferated a crapload of MANPADS, and are slapping them on as man vehicles as possible, as can be seen here on a BTR-60 and a Type-63 APC.
This is an “all-arms” air defense approach that can seriously jeopardize air operations, especially by rotary-wing aircraft. One should study the results of the 2003 Battle of Karbala to understand what kind of effect these systems could have (and 2003 didn’t involve MANPADS!)
The Army for a long time liked the idea of using attack helicopters for deep attack missions. Systems like these show why they’re not especially suited for the job. The RAH-66 Comanche was supposed to overcome that via stealth, but we saw how that worked out. https://twitter.com/luke_j_obrien/status/970851543665790977
