The Russian Federation’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson indicated on Monday that the Syrian Arab Republic could turn into a federal republic after the war concludes. If implemented, this will be Syria’s first drastic political change since the rise of the Ba’ath Party in 1963. A federal republic would be a complete 180 for the Syrian people, who have never had a representative government based on the respective provinces they live in. More importantly, this federal republic would be ideal for the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (YPG), who seeks domestic autonomy over the areas they govern, but not from Syria itself.
