Citat:I have been stationed on a cruiser before (CG-65) and am now currently stationed on the HSV-2 Swift. I can say from experience that the aluminum hull design is NOT meant for taking damage. We've had a couple of our bigger dudes onboard drop a heavy squat from their shoulders in the gym and put a 2 inch gash in the deck. The aluminum hull is not rated for fire and if there was hot burning fire (say from AVgas) it would literally melt the ship in half. The aluminum hull is great for high speed, great for taking rough seas, and great for manuevering into really shallow/oddly built ports & harbors. Not so good for taking an Exocet missle...Although I have to say that an anti-ship missle is called an anti-ship missle because it will literally tear the ass-end out of ANY ship, with the notable exception being a carrier. Any other ship in the US Navy would get fragged from a super-sonic missle impact, not just the aluminum hull design.
Having said all that though, we are fast as fuck and can maneuver in places that a normal ship would not even dream of going. The superstructure is made to flex and can take a punishment as sea as well.
But the Navy employs us in NON-COMBAT roles, such as humanitarian aid, strategic partnership training exercises, and deployment of small, high-speed units. If we were actually attacked we would drop the clutch, kick off the turbines and do 50+ kts to get out of there. The current LCS class of ships was based in part off the HSV-1 Joint Venture, the TSV-1, and the Swift. If they take the best qualities from the these prototypes and combine it with the best from the cruiser/destroyer/frigate classes, maybe they will have something great. But it sounds like they are just throwing money at a new expensive toy that looks cool.
It is true though that the crew can be drastically smaller on-board. We operate with a third of the personnel that a comparable Navy vessel requires, since there is a lot of automation and redundancy. We are all cross-trained in each others duties as well so that in turn cuts down on personnel requirements.
