The F-35’s Block 4 upgrade has many features, but Air Combat Command’s commander says its electronic warfare abilities will be most critical.

When asked what the F-35’s massive upgrade initiative known as Block 4 will bring to the table, Air Combat Command boss Gen. Mark Kelly made it crystal clear that the new electronic warfare capabilities it will acquire under the effort tops his list. The stealth jet’s future relevancy in high-end conflicts may even depend on it.

These upgrades will greatly enhance what is already regarded as a powerhouse of an electronic warfare suite aboard the F-35s flying today. They will better equip the jet for future fights where dominating the battle on the electromagnetic spectrum is expected to be an absolutely critical factor in determining winners and losers on the battlefield.

It was during a media roundtable at this year’s Air & Space Forces Association Warfare Symposium in Aurora, Colorado, when Gen. Mark Kelly emphasized to reporters in attendance, including The War Zone, just how important the new electronic warfare (EW) upgrades will be for Block 4 F-35s going forward. Being led by F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin, Block 4 is the overarching modernization effort for all three F-35 A/B/C variants that will be implemented in the coming years.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II, also commonly known as the Joint Strike Fighter, is about to undergo a largely classified upgrade that promises to turn the technologically advanced aircraft into a far more capable fighter. New improvements include 17 new weapon systems, powerful new radar, expanded electronic warfare capabilities, powerful propulsion upgrades, and more — much of which remains tucked nearly behind a veil of vast quantities of classified funding.

Citat: South Korea endorsed major defense projects Monday to purchase an additional batch of F-35A stealth fighters and shipborne Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) interceptors, the state arms procurement agency said, in a move to reinforce deterrence against North Korea's evolving military threats.
The Defense Project Promotion Committee approved a 3.75 trillion-won (US$2.85 billion) plan to buy the U.S.-made radar-evading jets through 2028, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said.
It did not disclose the number of jets to be purchased, but Seoul is expected to bring in some 20 F-35As under the new plan. The country's Air Force currently runs 40 F-35As manufactured by the U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin.

Citat:The Greek Defense Ministry is expected to decide next week whether Athens will propose to Lockheed Martin the inclusion of SSI (security, supply, information) and infrastructure programs in the F-35 fighter jets package with the participation of the Greek defense industry.
The SSI would resolve the issue of infrastructure for the reception of the F-35s in 2027-28. Otherwise, if this infrastructure is not in place the delivery of the aircraft to the Hellenic Air Force in 2027-28 will be difficult.
The issue of SSIs is critical for the Pentagon since it is the most common method of transferring know-how, which, in the case of the F-35, includes cybersecurity and network security. Tellingly, the possibility of these features being compromised by a third-party system (S-400) is what led to Turkey’s ejection from the program.
