How Many Airmen Does It Take To Run An F-35 Gas Station?

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah—Earlier this spring, the 388th Fighter Wing proved just 12 Airmen can operate an F-35 contingency location, refueling and rearming the fighters at spots across Georgia and South Carolina.

The demonstration, part of exercise Agile Flag 23-1, marks yet another proof of concept for the Air Force’s plan to send small teams of Airmen far afield to keep fighter jets running, then pack them up again before moving to another location.

“You can kind of treat a contingency location like a gas station” Maj. Cahn Wadhams, commander of the 4th Fighter Generation Squadron under the 388th, told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“Jets land, we gas them, we load bombs and then they leave,” he added. “Whatever aircraft lands there, we can get it ready, though we are limited to support just two aircraft at any given time. That is why we’ll set up for a specific set of time, then change location. That is the ‘agile’ piece of Agile Combat Employment.”

Agile Combat Employment (ACE) is the Air Force’s operating concept in which Airmen and aircraft disperse from a central base to smaller, more austere locations in order to complicate an adversary’s targeting—a hub-and-spoke model.

Prvi belgijski

Citat:On 5 June 2023, the Belgische Luchtmacht (BLu, Belgian Air Force) Chief Major General Thierry Dupont signed the bulkhead of the first Belgian F-35A Lightning II during a visit to Lockheed Martin's Fort Worth (TX) production facility.
In October 2018, the Belgian government had chosen the Lightning II to replace its ageing F-16 Fighting Falcons. In a USD 4,5 billion contract, the government ordered 34 F-35A Lightning IIs.

odsad ce izgleda moci da jedan te isti softver koriste i na F22 i na f35.

An F-35 from the 461st Flight Test Squadron recently took flight here with a complement of software applications developed by government and industry providers previously tested on the F-22 – demonstrating for the first time the ability to use the same tactical software applications on both stealth fighters.

That success was immediately followed by another milestone when those applications were updated by software developers at Hill AFB in Utah and flown at Edwards less than 24 hours later.

F-35 Costs Still Climbing, as Pentagon Updates the Fleet
Arrow https://www.defenseone.com/technology/2023/05/f-35.....et/386917/
Citat:The U.S. military's costliest weapons program keeps getting more expensive: upgrades for the F-35 fleet will add more than $1 billion to last year's estimates, according to a new Government Accountability Office report.

The Pentagon is five years into updating its fleet of F-35s, an effort known as Block 4. But the cost of the upgrades continues to climb, with an increase of $1.4 billion since GAO’s April 2022 report, bringing the total cost to $16.5 billion.

“The total increase to date is 55 percent more than what the program originally reported it would cost in 2018,” the government watchdog agency said.

And before the F-35 fleet can receive the upgrades, it needs a suite of hardware and software improvements, known as Technology Refresh 3, or TR-3. Those improvements are a year behind schedule and won’t be delivered until April 2024.

Sve se vrti dalje. rast troškova iznad planiranih...
Citat:F-35’s current Pratt & Whitney engine is also driving up program costs, because it’s running twice as hot as it was designed to, requiring earlier and more frequent aircraft maintenance. The extra heat could add up to $38 billion in maintenance costs to the program
Motor se greje duplo više od plana.
Citat:While JPO knows the current engine doesn’t have enough power, it doesn’t know how much more power it will actually need.
