JF-17 THUNDER WAY TO MATURITY
Two months on the largest air shows have earned him a reputation for well-balanced plane. Performances are solid. Not among the top five, but in standard third-generation fighter aircraft. The same is true for sensors and weapons and the price is two to three times lower than the competition, the American F-16 and Russia's MiG-29th When JF-17 debut in the sight of the world's aviation public in Farnborough Aerospace Fair in 2010 in the United Kingdom Pakistan's air force had only one squadron with about two dozen JF-17th But since then, the numbers have doubled. Now we have two squadrons of JF-17: 16th squadron the "Black Panthers" and 26 Squadron "Black Spiders". Sixteen fully operational on 26 has a dual role: retraining and operational training. Soon we will form a third, but we have not yet decided who will be the squadron. As the number of aircraft is concerned, around 40 JF-17 flying and even a few of them from Block 1, the first production run, in the final stages of concluding - said Brigadier General Khalid Mahmood, deputy director of JF-17 in the Pakistani Air Force.
HYBRID and electronic systems
Although Pakistan's air force is one of the first foreign user of F-16 Fighting Falcon cockpit JF-17 still recalls another fighter - the Swedish Gripen. In fact, at one point Pakistan's Air Force has seriously considered the purchase of Gripen and the team of technicians and pilots sent to Sweden to test it thoroughly. That's part of the Gripen became an inspiration in the development of Thunder.
In addition to the advanced man-machine interfaces what JF-17 separates from the second-generation fighter aircraft is and its hybrid control system. Specifically, mechanical control systems as can be found in the second generation of fighter aircraft, those that JF-17 to replace, do not offer any form of protection to the pilots of the threshold limits the angle of attack and G loads. Therefore, they are reluctant to fly them to the border of flight options and do not exploit their full potential aerodynamic. Modern electronic control systems offer different types of protection but they are not cheap, or at least they were fifteen years ago when he started developing JF-17th "Cost reduction has been a priority from the very beginning and for JF-17 selected simpler and cheaper hybrid control system. Compared to modern electronic systems, hybrid is just one electronic channel, the angle of the other two, the tilt and direction mechanically. It was a technological minimum monitoring the angle of attack and G loads through own aircraft. however technology has progressed significantly since then and today we can offer modern electronic control system that is only 10% more expensive than the existing hybrid. For now, "on the drawing board" but if someone wants to, we can not certify a period of two years, "said Zhu Zeng, a representative of the Chinese aircraft manufacturers CAC at Airshow China.
TESTED DRIVE AND FLEXIBLE WEAPONS
What are the conclusions of users on drivetrain, JF-17, the Russian engine Klimov RD-93, tested version of the RD-33 engine from the MiG-29? "We flew 7,000 hours and the engine did not have any problems.'s Very robust, no FADEC (full electronic control of operating parameters, digital), but there is some form of electronic surveillance so that the handle for worry-free," said Gen. Mahmood. Additional confirmation of the robustness and reliability of the engine RD-93 results from tests carried out at the airport located at an altitude of 2000 meters where the JF-17 taking off and landing in combat configurations at temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees C.
The integration of weapons JF-17 has brought a lot of flexibility. "We have a complete computer code (source code) for the control system and the combat system. Can we buy any weapons on the world market and integrate it to the JF-17 alone, at home, in Pakistan. We have a team of engineers and test pilots who make up a separate group so it's all done in the Pakistani Air Force, "said Mahmood.
What further adds to the flexibility of the JF-17 when it comes to the integration of new weapons in 1760 on all standard interfaces using drop points. Because it is a digital standard, the 1760 eliminates the need for repeated "wiring" aircraft whenever it adds new weapons.
ROCKET FUEL important than
The primary sensor for aerial combat on JF-17 is a radar KLJ-7 developed by Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology (NRIET). According to the available information, it is a reduced version of the KLJ-10 radar developed for the Chinese J-10. According to the manufacturer's brochure range it is compatible with a range radar-guided missiles SD-10 two of which are standard hunting configuration. "We have the ability to carry four SD-10, but we decided that we are not responsible. As JF-17 small plane, we concluded that our fuel is more important than the two additional missiles," said General Mahmood. Besides the two SD-10 standard configuration hunting JF-17 consists of two heat-seeking missiles PL-5EII and two or three podded fuel tank capacity of 1000 liters per inner podkrilnim using drop points and 800 liters per podtrupnoj podvjesnoj point.
For self-defense JF-17 has a fully integrated system for electronic battle that according to Group Captain Ahsan is not of Chinese origin. The system comes with all of the earth equipment package, which is crucial for independent use, primarily for the "construction" of data bases on opposing signals radar / air defense systems and the development of techniques for their interference. The system consists of a central control unit and four subsystems, radar detector irradiation (RWR), detectors approaching missiles (Maws), launchers, IR and radar decoys and distractor. At Airshow China 2012 plane is presented with a distractor KG-300G but still not confirmed if that was used by Pakistan's Air Force. According to the brochure, the system is highly customizable and can be fully integrated with other subsystems such as RWR or Maws (they would serve the shutter).
COMBINATION OF BOMBS
To engage targets on the ground is the primary sensor inertial platform bound with a GPS receiver (INS / GPS). It is a fundamental prerequisite for the CCIP / CCRP aiming regimes and as such is crucial for precise targeting of general purpose bombs. But for more complex scenarios recently JF-17 can carry "smart bombs". "Currently, we use a combination of Western and Chinese smart bombs to mark targets but still rely on other aircraft," said Mahmood. At the last Airshow China in JF-17 was introduced with laser-guided bombs LT-2 and several versions of GPS and laser / GPS-guided bombs from the family of LS-6 Chinese companies Luoyang Opto-Electro Technology Development Centre (LOEC). Both types of bombs come in the form of a whale which, like the U.S. JDAM system usually "dumb" bombs into a "smart". Kit consists of the tail module guidance and nose with a laser sensor module (LT-2 and some versions of the LS-6) and modules with hinged wings on the body to increase the haul (some versions of the LS-6). According to the pamphlet bombs LS-6 it is possible to define the route of flight to attack out of the less defended direction.
When used for anti-ship missions JF-17 can carry up to two missile C-802A range about 180 km. For mission suppression opponent's air defense (SEAD) JF-17 carries two missiles Brazilian MAR-1. At the last China Airshow with JF-17 is shown in a brand new rocket CM-400AKG intended targets on the ground. But has not been confirmed whether use is a Pakistan Air Force actually even the currently certified to carry the JF-17th
Job easier for technicians
How Pakistan Air Force pilots could tell when it comes to a cockpit and technicians so they can tell when it comes to maintaining JF-17th "Most of the problems with maintaining older generation fighters such as the F-7 derived from the location of certain components. When JF-17 we decided to gather the most important components of the system in one place as a technician in the event of a failure would not have to remove a lot of the panel would have all the components of each systems were behind one or two panels, "said Colonel Babar Ali, an engineer from the office of JF-17 in the Pakistani Air Force who spent 10 years of his career keeping planes on the apron. According to him, all the components that must be checked frequently, such as after every 100 hours of flight time, are on the first level of "depth" or technician not previously removed a component that would come to her. The same applies to components that are expected to be blight or dissipate more quickly than others. The result is the same or less time than međuletnog review for F-7, which has a lot less of the JF-17th When it comes to personnel in the technical part and it is reduced in comparison to the squadron with F-seventh "In squadrons F-7 in the first instance we maintain about 170 people while in the squadron of 16 JF-17, we have about 120 for JF-17, we use the same concept of maintenance for the F-16," said Ali. Regular maintenance of the JF-17 is based on a 100-hour inspection. "Each 100-hour inspection is a bit more complicated than the previous one and so on until the plane reaches 400 hours. This review demanding than the basic 100-hour and 800-hour is the most demanding. Afterwards everything is reset and the plane starts from scratch, so to speak, and so the end of life, "added the colonel. According to available information, the life of JF-17 is currently 3000 hours but this is subject to change depending on the trend of spending dragon plane
When it comes to engine maintenance Ali explains how motor "living separate lives." "Međuremontni interval engine RD-93 is 600 hours with regular inspections every 100 hours. After overhaul can work more than 600 hours to 1,200 hours, which is the end of his life, and then it is thrown."
MINIMUM LOGISTICS SURPRISE
According to Ali's words, the JF-17 is a plane with predictive maintenance concepts. Equipped with the comprehensive self-diagnostic system that captures more than 600 parameters with 300 ms interval and will always alert the technician to the problems with the "state of health" component to this in a timely manner could order a new one. "I'll give you one example: fuel filter should be replaced when the differential pressure reaches a certain value - in this case, the first after each flight technician via a laptop connected to the plane and could see the value of the differential pressure increases from 0.5 to 0.6 and at 0.7, etc. This gives a pretty good sign that they will soon have to replace the filter. " When asked if the logistics system now mature enough colonel replied that the logistics system functions with minimal surprises. "Based on previous experience and each year we define logistics requirements and appropriate consumption of spare parts in the previous period, parts ordering in advance to surprise was minimal. Course, you can never completely eliminate the surprises of the logistics system, but you can minimize them. We do a careful analysis of trends consumption of spare parts and modifying their inventory twice a year, "Ali said, adding that the reliability so far has been surprisingly good - above 95%.
Cost reduction has been a priority from the outset so that the JF-17 is selected simpler hybrid control system. Compared to modern electronic systems, hybrid is just one electronic channel, while the other two were mechanically
Benefit for industry
Thanks to the program JF-17 Pakistani airline industry has progressed with 25% share in the production of training aircraft K-8 Karakorum to nearly 50% of the production of hunting aircraft. "We started with the production of small predserijom of eight aircraft that was used for running production processes and to evaluate the operational capacity aircraft - the so-called. Fine tune the plane. Afterwards we started series production of 42 planes from blocks 1 and soon we will start with production of 50 aircraft from Block 2, "said Brigadier Mahmood. "The difference between the planes of the block 1 and block 2 is mainly limited to the manufacturing processes, a little on electronics and something to maintain. Concluded that some systems are not as" technician-friendly "so we decided to make them more" friendly technician. "Dragon aircraft and engine will remain the same "
The integration of weapons JF-17 has brought a lot of flexibility (right). When JF-17 are collected the most important components of individual systems in one place as a technician in the event of a failure would not have to remove a lot of the panel (see figure below). Cockpit JF-17 recalls another fighter - Swedish Gripen
There is no "two-seater"
According to traditional thinking Two seat fighter version is a fundamental prerequisite for a successful re-training new pilots. But for Pakistan's Air Force Two seat version of JF-17 is not in the game. "This airplane is very easy to fly, even simpler than the F-16th That's why we developed the concept that we will not need a two-seater, but we will use for retraining advanced simulator. Currently no train pilots leaving the academy but they successfully train very young pilots from squadrons used F-7 as we have confirmation DWA correctly decided, "a resolute Mahmood.
