Ja sam mislio da je to Kinezima kao Amerikancima F22 i da neće u izvoz. Dok bi J31 od Šenjanga bio ono što je Amerikancima F35 - i za izvoz i za sebe.

Razvoj WS-15 motora započeo je početkom 1990-ih, uz postizanje značajnih prekretnica tokom godina.
Motor je prvi put uspešno testiran 2006. godine.
U martu 2022. godine, izveštaji su pokazali da su započela ispitivanja J-20 sa WS-15 motorom, uz primetno poboljšanje performansi.
Do decembra 2022. godine, motor je bio u završnoj fazi testiranja, a do juna 2023. varijanta J-20 opremljena sa dva WS-15 motora uspešno je obavila svoj prvi let, označavajući značajan napredak u kineskoj vojnoj avijaciji.
WS-15 je dizajniran da zameni privremeni WS-10 motor koji se trenutno koristi u J-20. Očekuje se da će pružiti bolji potisak, veću efikasnost goriva i operativne mogućnosti u poređenju sa prethodnicima, sa ciljem potiska od 180 kN (40.000 funti).
