Citat:Lockheed test pilot Bob Gilliland makes a low pass at Palmdale, California, near the end of the first flight of the Lockheed SR-71 triple sonic high altitude reconnaissance aircraft (US Air Force serial number 61-7950) on 22 December 1964. Gilliland was airborne for just over one hour and reached a speed of more than 1,000 mph. During its operational career, crews in the thirty-two SR-71s built logged a total of 53,490 hours of flight time, of which 11,675 was spent at Mach 3-plus. They flew 3,551 operational sorties. Universally known as Blackbird, the SR-71 never actually had an official nickname. Company pilot Bill Park... flew safety chase on the Blackbird’s first flight in a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.Citat:A US Air Force crew, flying an SR-71 Blackbird high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, is on the downwind leg heading for home at Beale AFB, California, after a training flight circa 1990. This aircraft appears to be Air Force serial number 61-7958, which was used to set both the world Absolute Speed record and the 15/25 kilometer closed course speed record in July 1976.To set the Absolute Speed record, Capt. Al Joersz (pilot) and Maj. George Morgan (Reconnaissance Systems Operator) had to cross the electronic timing gate, travel the twenty-five kilometer course, cross a second timing gate, turn around, and repeat the course from the opposite end to negate the effect of winds. The officially recorded average speed of the two legs was 2,193.16 mph.
