Ali alternative amerima baš i nema, žele li zadržati kakvu takvu sposobnost prodora u dobro branjene zračne prostore. makar koštalo koliko koštalo...

Why the U.S. Wants a New Bomber
Citat:But the Air Force revived its bomber effort under new Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The new “Long-Range Strike Bomber” would be slightly less sophisticated and therefore cheaper than the Next-Generation Bomber: just $550 million per copy for up to 100 copies, with production beginning in the early 2020s. The U.S. Congress approved the first $300 million in development funding late last year. The Pentagon has vowed to cancel the Long-Range Strike Bomber if the total projected program cost exceeds $55 billion. Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman will compete for the contract, details of which are a closely guarded secret.

Citat:All we know for sure is that there is some money allocated for the program in the budget--about $300 million in fiscal year 2013 and total of $6.3 billion from fiscal years 2013 to 2017--and what few details the USAF is willing to release. We know that the new bomber will be a stealthy, optionally-manned, long-range penetrating strike aircraft that will be part of a "family of systems" from the service's budget documents. Those same documents say the service is aiming for a price tag of around $550 million per aircraft--and it wants the plane operational by the mid-2020s. Ultimately, the Air Force hopes to buy anywhere from 80 to 100 aircraft.

Citat:Northrop Grumman, which built the B-2 Spirit, is one of three potential contractors who are likely to be building the new LRS-B. While the NGB was terminated, many of those technologies are certain to find new life on the LRS-B. The DEW Line has unearthed a patent filing by Northrop that details some of the features of their old NGB design--it could provide some hints as to what the company is cooking up for the new project.
The aircraft, as can be seen in the drawings, shows family traits common to the US Navy X-47B unmanned aircraft demonstrator. In many respects, at least to me, it looks like an X-47B that has been scaled up by a factor of 10 with an added cockpit and more engines. It has the same cranked kite planform--but the (retractable) canards are new. Apparently, they would have only been used during take-offs and landings according to the patent filing text. Also of note, the bomber design has four engines. Interestingly, one of the big innovations was that it was designed for modular construction--which could make it less ungodly expensive.

Citat:"It's likely that we'll start the bomber programme as a manned programme," Donley says. "It'll have the option to be unmanned at some point and so I think that option will be protected."
Citat:The USAF still hopes to build anywhere from 80 to 100 LRS-B aircraft which would become operational in the mid-2020s. "Cost is a major factor for us," Donley says.
Sto je 4-5 puta vise od broja B-2
