America Needs To Develop A New Bomber Now
Citat:The current bomber force is capable but aging. The heavy bomber force includes 76 B-52 Stratofortresses averaging 50 years of age, 63 B-1 Lancers averaging 28 years, and 20 B-2 Spirits averaging 20 years. Each of the bombers can deliver a mixed payload of precision munitions to an unrefueled range of 6,000 miles or greater. The B-52 is the only standoff cruise missile carrier in the fleet, the B-1 is the only supersonic bomber, and the B-2 is the only stealthy bomber. All three are facing age-related issues.

Bice nesto od ovoga jer ce glavni biti Boing a Lokid ce biti glavni partner
Citat:The Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin Corporation announced they are teaming again to compete for the United States Air Force’s (USAF) Long-Range Strike – Bomber (LRS-B) program, with Boeing acting as the prime contractor and Lockheed Martin as the primary teammate. The program is aimed at delivering 80-100 very stealthy, long-range bombers to the Air Force, with an initial operational capability in 2024-26, and with a unit cost ceiling of $550 million. In addition to the manned bomber capability the Long Range Strike (LRS) family of systems will also combined with other long endurance unmanned platforms and cruise missiles

USAF Defends Need for New Long-Range Bomber
Citat:The new platform will be fielded in the mid-2020s, with penetrating capability in mind. The service will procure between 80 and 100 of the bombers, which will mostly be made with existing technologies. Those platforms will also have both stand-off and direct-attack munitions and room for a “significant” payload.

Bice izdat RFP (request for proposal) do jeseni.
Citat:Service officials have cited a cost figure of $550 million per plane as the ceiling for the program, but even that figure has some mystery to it. Outside observers have noted that the figure does not include research and development costs, which could drive up that amount.
Gen. Larry Spencer, the vice chief of staff for the service, described setting that price point as a way to keep requirements from skyrocketing during development.
“What has happened in the past when wave developed new platforms, what’s happened over time, is the price just starts to skyrocket as people just want to put more and more stuff on it,” Spencer said. “As technology changes, people want more and more capability.”
“We want to get 80 to 100 of these, and the only way to do that is to keep the price down,” he added. “So we have had to turn back the temptation to put more stuff on this bomber.”
