It’s Official: Minimum of 100 B-21s
Citat:The Air Force’s requirement for the B-21 Raider bomber, initially stated as “80-100” airplanes, is now officially at least 100 aircraft, the Air Force said in clarifying recent senior leader remarks. Written testimony presented to the House Armed Services Committee last week by Air Force Global Strike Command chief Gen. Robin Rand and vice chief of staff Gen. Stephen Wilson indicated that 100 is now the minimum number of B-21s required. Through a spokesman, the Air Force confirmed the number, saying the change happened “in Spring 2016” at the request of AFGSC. At that time, USAF established 100 “as the floor—not the ceiling” for the B-21 fleet size, he said. AFGSC “requires a minimum of 100 B-21 Raider aircraft, with a mix of legacy bombers, to meet future COCOM [combatant commander] requirements,” the spokesman said.

Hoce 174
Citat:Rather than state a requirement for “at least” 100 new B-21 bombers, the Air Force ought to be requesting 174 of the jets, in order to field a dozen deployable bombers with each of 10 Air & Space Expeditionary Forces (AEFs), said retired Lt. Gen David Deptula, dean of AFA’s Mitchell Institute.
Chairing a panel on “The Evolution of Stealth” at ASC17, Deptula said the Air Force must conserve its heaviest hitters and add to their numbers.
“What we really need is 120 combat-coded B-21s,” which translates to a fleet of 174 of the jets in order to have some in test, maintenance, training, depot, and some for attrition, he said.

Napreduje
Citat:Nineteen months into the highly classified B-21 stealth bomber program, things are moving as planned with drawings being completed and released and a Preliminary Design Review completed, Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office Director Randall Walden said at ASC17.
In a panel discussion on acquisition affordability, Walden said the program so far is meeting its goals: to design an aircraft that can “hold any target on the planet at risk”—meaning it can penetrate any air defense system now planned—and deliver “at least” 100 airplanes “on time, on cost, with the best value.”
To quicken its delivery, Walden said, the B-21 is based on “mature technologies” and will “leverage those lessons learned” from the B-2, F-22, and F-35 programs.
“Our biggest activity right now is putting out drawings to build the bomber,” he said, the airplane having passed its first major milestone—Preliminary Design Review. The next task is to “get on with the first builds of the structure.”
Programmatically, he said, the B-21 is “doing quite well,” having “plagiarized” the structure and culture of Lockheed’s “Skunkworks” model: It’s being built by a small team with clear direction, avoidance of requirements changes, and management that “doesn’t get in the way.” That said, he noted the B-21 program still has to follow the 5000-series of acquisition rules. In order to reduce costs, the B-21 is being built for open mission systems, meaning future upgrades don’t have to be supplied by the prime contractor. Toward that end, he said the program is working with MIT’s Lincoln Labs to build standards that will allow any qualified vendor to work on the program.

Novi plan po kojem bi se i B-2 i B-1 ranije povukli iz upotrebe
Citat:On February 11th, 2017 Aviation Week reported that the USAF has created an updated "bomber vector," basically its future roadmap for its bomber platforms, which includes divesting both the B-1B and B-2A fleets fully by the mid 2030s. This development is especially eyebrow-raising for the B-2 community which was slated to serve into the second half of the century and continues to receive an array of upgrades that would supposedly allow it to do so effectively.
Citat:Under the USAF's original plan, the flying force would hold onto the B-1B till 2040, and the B-52 to around that same timeframe, although the B-52's future always seemed brighter than the B-1B's which does not have a nuclear strike mission and is very expensive to operate and historically suffers chronically from low availability (more on that in a moment). The B-2 was supposed to soldier on till 2058 and would operate alongside the B-21 for decades.
Under the new plan, the B-2 would be retired first, no later than 2032—over a decade and a half sooner than in the previous roadmap. The B-1 would be put out to pasture not long after, with it leaving the service no later than 2036.
