Temporary Restriction of the Availability of the F-5E Tiger Fleet

During an inspection, a (zabranjeno) was found in the airframe structure of a Tiger F-5E (single-seater), which resulted in flight restrictions for the 30 F-5E Tiger aircraft that still conduct regular flight activities.
The two-seater F-5Fs are not affected by this. As for the other 18 F-5Es and F-5Fs, they are part of the inventory of the Air Force but are no longer flown.
As part of this overall inspection, another, even bigger (zabranjeno) was detected on the same part of the structure of the aircraft. This (zabranjeno) was described as very serious by the technical evaluation team. After a joint risk analysis with armasuisse and RUAG, the Air Force has decided to take preventive measures:
-- Aircraft whose structure has a (zabranjeno) are excluded from flight service until they are repaired;
-- Aircraft that have not yet been checked are temporarily grounded until the inspection order is carried out.
The availability of the fleet of F-5E Tiger is consequently restricted. Currently, 13 F-5Es still need to be checked. The implementation of the inspection order requires two weeks of work per machine. Under current planning, all aircraft will have been checked by the second quarter of 2015.
The Air Force’s commitment to the World Economic Forum (WEF) will be assured because it is the F / A-18 Hornets that will fulfill the main mission in the restricted airspace over Davos.
The temporary restriction on the availability of F-5E Tiger also affects those aircraft painted in the colors of the Patrouille Suisse aerobatic team. Consequently, it will not be able to conduct its demonstration at the Lauberhorn with its six Tigers flying the Swiss flag.
