Air Force grounds entire fleet of B-1 bombers for 2nd time in less than a year
Citat:The Air Force has grounded the entire fleet of B-1 bombers for the second time in less than a year.
During a routine inspection, "potentially fleet-wide issues were identified with the rigging of the drogue chute," according to the Air Force Global Strike Command.
The drogue chute is the first parachute that deploys when the pilot or crew member ejects.

Overtasking of B-1 Lancer Fleet Led to Faster Deterioration, General Says
Citat:The U.S. Air Force overcommitted its B-1B Lancer bomber fleet in Middle East operations over the last decade, causing it to deteriorate more quickly than expected, according to the head of Air Force Global Strike Command.
The bombers were recently called back to the U.S. to receive more upgrades and maintenance to prepare for the next high-end fight.
"We overextended the B-1s in [U.S. Central Command]," Air Force Gen. Timothy Ray, commander of AFGSC, told reporters during a defense writers group breakfast Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
"Normally, you would commit -- [with] any bomber or any modern combat aircraft -- about 40 percent of the airplanes in your possession as a force, [not including those] in depot," he explained. "We were probably approaching the 65 to 70 percent commit rate [for] well over a decade. So the wear and tear on the crews, the maintainers, and certainly the airplane, that was my cause for asking for us to get out of the CENTCOM fight."

First B-1Bs resume flying after nearly month-long grounding
Citat:The first B-1B Lancer bombers are back in the air after concerns over its ejection seats grounded the entire fleet nearly a month ago, Air Force Global Strike Command said Tuesday.
The B-1B fleet was grounded by Gen. Timothy Ray, commander of Global Strike Command, March 28 over concerns with the drogue chute system, which corrects the seat’s angle to allow an airman to safely eject from the bomber. It was the second time in a year the Air Force grounded the Lancer over an ejection seat issue.
B-1Bs will be returned to flight status individually, as inspections and maintenance are finished on them, the command said in Tuesday’s news release.

Citat:Rockwell B-1A #3 (S/N 74-0160, C/N 003) wearing a desert camo paint scheme sits at Edwards Air Force Base on Sunday, November 9th, 1986. She has since been relocated to the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver, Colorado. This unique livery has since been substituted with an unprepossessing, generic one. 74-0160 flew 138 flights for a total of 829.4 hours during her time in service. The other B-1A on the left of this photo wearing green is the very first one built, (74-0158, C/N 001). She was unfortunately scrapped, remains last reported in Rome, NY. The tiny white Cessna NA-37B Dragonfly with the orange tail could be S/N 73-1090, C/N 43481, which was used for flight test at Edwards for years and can now be seen restored and displayed at the base museum.
