Recently, Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist and his Finnish counterpart, Carl Haglund that military cooperation between the two countries should deepen. Among other things, Sweden and Finland's air forces will able to operate together and use each other's air bases.
Now comes the next step. On Thursday, the Swedish government approved Finland to take note of classified information concerning the JAS 39 Gripen NG, the upgraded model that will replace today's JAS Gripen 39 C / D.
"The background to the request pursuant to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration is that Finland has announced the acquisition process to replace the current Finnish F-18 aircraft will begin in the fall of 2015, and Finland has thus expressed the wish to take part of information relating to the JAS 39 Gripen," writes the Swedish Government in the decision.
The issues of Jas 39 Gripen from the group Finnish Defense Ministry has appointed to conduct a feasibility study of the replacement of the F / A-18.
"The group writes a report to be completed in May," says Joakim Wallin, Marketing Director of Defence and Security Export Agency.
Finnish Air Force currently has 62 US F / A-18, called Hornet aircraft. They were purchased in 1995 and is considered to be consumed in the mid-2020s.
To replace the American aircraft is estimated to cost at least €6 billion, corresponding to approximately SEK 60 billion, and it will take several years before everything is ready.
Other fighters mentioned in the preliminary speculations are American F-35A and Russian Suchoj T-50.
Slovakia is otherwise the country in time closest to a Gripen deal. The country wants to either buy or lease eight-twelve Gripen aircraft.
"We are in discussions with Slovakia and it is a positive dialogue," says Joakim Wallin, the negotiations which are expected to be completed this year.

Kakva kombinatorika u Finskoj: Boeing ima vlasnicki udeo u BAE, a BAE u SAAB-u.
Na kraju ce Boeing odluciti da li ce progurati F-18E/F ili JAS-39NG.
Sada je sve u njihovoj kalkulaciji - gde ce vise zaraditi. 62 aviona su ipak 62 aviona.
Грипен се већ такмичио са Ф/А-18 у Финској и изгубио је због притисака Амера. Колико се сећам САД нису хтеле да уз Грипена испоруче ракете AIM-120. И победио је Стршљен.
