+ Su-25
We took our seats in the cabins, and almost immediately next to us, an enemy missile hit the IL-76. The explosion was very loud. Fortunately, the runway remained intact. We start to start the engines, and at this time another Il-76 taxis in front of us and stands right on the taxiway and they start loading something into it. And we have six Su-25 aircraft... So we all taxied under the wing of that "Il" at night under the command of an aviation technician. They took off, and already on the route I saw that almost everywhere in my field of vision something was burning and exploding... It was a terrible picture that will remain in my memory forever. Having arrived at the specified airfield, I make a pass over the runway and see that it is blocked by cars.
And in a moment they start shooting at us... Well, I think the airfield has already been captured by the Russians. But one of our planes still lands, literally jumping over a truck on the runway. On the ground, they recognize our planes and start cleaning the cars, and we finally sit down. It is clear that most people were confused, because not every morning started with a war, but later everything fell into place. I told the commander that I had taken out the whole group and that we were ready for battle.
... Rostislav immediately received a combat order: "get ready for departure, Russian columns are coming from the Crimean side." The first column went towards Melitopol, and the second - towards Nova Kakhovka, past Chaplynka. The convoy was large and was covered by Ka-52 attack helicopters.
- Any person feels fear at such moments. You understand that this is a war, that you cannot avoid it, but you are the commander and you have to make decisions. It is not known exactly where the column is, that is, it must be hunted in a certain area. Returning to my own, I say that there is a first combat task, it is necessary to find and destroy the enemy column. I go and ask: who is with me? Sashko Shcherbakov, my guide, the captain, called out. When we were already walking to the planes, he said to me: "it's scary, commander"... I'm scared too, but who, if not us? In a short time, they performed all the necessary calculations, discussed tactical techniques, and prepared the planes for takeoff. It's good that once, even before the invasion, I drove that road from Novaya Kakhovka to Chaplinka and knew what was there and how. I have 4.2 tons of fuel, which is enough for 45-50 minutes of a combat sortie, it depends on the combat load, maneuvers and speed. If everything is quiet, you can fly for an hour and a half, but it also depends on what "gifts" are under the wing. So there is not much time for everything.
...He found the column when there was little fuel left. She stood at the gas station, stood tight, large 22-ton fuel tankers were refueling armored personnel carriers, trucks and other military equipment of the enemy.
— The column was covered by landing, so I found it practically under me. At first I thought it might be ours, but seeing the attack aircraft, the Russians opened fire. I saw similar scenes in movies about the Second World War - when they open fire on you from everything there is, and the air is filled with an incredible amount of tracers... We were going so low, and the desire was to hide in the terrain, only there was a plain and no hills. He turned the revolutions to maximum, gave the command to the driven: "We are working!". An attack from the east was not possible, so we made a maneuver to mislead the enemy: we gave hope to the enemy that they would drive us away. After 15 seconds, my pair, after a low-altitude combat turn, attacked the column in the direction of movement, starting from the tail.
On the combat course, I notice the launch of a missile into the front hemisphere of my plane... I think: that's it, but at least I'll take as much as possible with me, I press the combat button and pull the control handle of the plane towards me to scatter the missiles throughout the column. I didn't have time to withdraw the plane from the attack, when the first rockets hit the Russian convoy, the cars with ammunition detonated, and at the same second, a cloud of fire with debris appeared in front of the plane, the entry into which was inevitable. The red-yellow fire blinded my eyes, the cabin became instantly hot... I thought I had caught fire. After flying out of hell, I immediately paid attention to the engine revolutions: they were below permissible, the thrust dropped sharply, the speed was already minimal, and I was ready to eject, but at that moment the revolutions began to recover. I put my stormtrooper down to give the acceleration tendency. The speed increases and I leave the battle. I was ready to exhale, but with my peripheral vision I noticed the launch of another rocket. I immediately shoot the traps on which the rocket is triggered, but the blast wave still reached, because of which my Su-25 made a nod down at a height of 20 meters. I snatched the attack aircraft literally in front of the ground. I am empty... no rockets, no traps... And thank God, maneuvering, left the battle. A burning column was left behind.
On the way back, I start to call the driver, but in vain, I get silence in response. Hope all is well with him…. There are 600 kilograms of fuel left, I barely make it to the reserve airfield, I see that one hydraulic system has failed - there is no pressure at all, the second one also loses pressure, and when the revolutions increase, the wrong sound of the engines appears. I warn the ground that there will be an emergency landing, the mechanization of the wing does not work, besides, I do not have a brake parachute - I used it when removing the plane from under impact, I say: prepare a "fire". But miraculously, the landing was successful, he braked, there was even enough fuel to clear the lane. I exhaled, climbed out of the cockpit and saw that my Su-25 was completely battered. Keel, wings, everything is in holes. I look at the blades of the engines - none of them are intact, all of them are broken. How he drove me is a mystery. I remember that I was waiting for Sashka and kept hoping that the walkie-talkie was damaged or that he had sat down somewhere, but, unfortunately, he died. Having completed the combat task with honor, directing the downed plane into the enemy column.
... When the engineering and technical specialists from the brigade got to the airfield, they saw that the plane was beyond repair - even the battery was dead. My Su-25 remained in that place, it was its last flight. I treat our airplanes as if they were alive - they have a soul, even if the heart is made of metal. I am grateful to him for saving me and fighting for my life until the last breath of the engines. By the way, once during the shelling of the airfield, a rocket hit next to him, and he took the entire impact on himself - no other aircraft and no people were injured by that explosion.
