More than a thousand UK engineering and manufacturing jobs have been secured by a multi million pound MoD contract to future proof two fleets of military helicopters.
The £760m investment in Merlins and Apaches, announced by the Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, will secure highly skilled, technical posts at sites across the UK.
A £430m contract will provide maintenance and support for the Army’s Apache attack helicopter, which is currently used on operations in Afghanistan, for the next five years.
The additional £330m investment will see the RAF’s Merlin Mk3/3a helicopters upgraded for use by the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force.
The expert work will be carried out by AgustaWestland at its sites in Yeovil, Suffolk and Hampshire, sustaining as many as 537 jobs within the company. A further 500 jobs will be protected in the supply chain at GE Aviation in Cheltenham, General Dynamics in East Sussex, Selex ES in Luton and APPH Aviation Services in Cheshire.

Tajvanski AH-64E i dalje prizemljeni

Citat:Taiwan’s 12 AH-64E attack helicopters are still grounded despite having new transmission boxes installed.
Army Command Headquarters said flight tests have to be completed before the helicopters are cleared for missions.
Earlier, it was reported that the aircraft will be serviceable again on Feb. 11.

Israel upgrades Apache helicopters after U.S. blocked their modernization
Citat:Israel, despite opposition from the Obama administration, has managed to upgrade its fleet of attack helicopters.
Military sources said the Israel Air Force has overseen a project to modernize its AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters.
The sources said the Air Force was equipping the Apaches with two new electronic warfare systems developed in the Jewish state.
“They are based on the huge operational experience of the force in using the Apache Longbow in a variety of combat scenarios,” an officer, identified only as Maj. Yonatan, said.
The upgrade has been developed amid the U.S. refusal to modernize Israel’s Apache fleet, employed in attacks on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
The sources said the administration of President Barack Obama blocked Israeli efforts to modernize the Apaches or purchase new helicopters from Boeing.
The new Israeli systems were cited by the official magazine of the Air Force. The sources said the sensors underwent trials in early 2014 and would be integrated on the Apaches later this year.
The sources said the Air Force would enhance the AH-64A helicopter to D configuration. They cited such capabilities as avionics, EW and advanced munitions, including the AGM-114 Hellfire, produced by the U.S. firm Lockheed Martin.
“The upgraded Apaches now also carry several new Israeli missiles,” a source said.

Indonesian pilots start Apache training

Citat:Indonesian Army pilots have started their training to fly the AH-64E. Army Chief of Staff, General Budiman, said four of the eight helicopters will be stationed in Natuna Islands while the rest will go to Jakarta.
