The 119 Leopard tanks which are being acquired by the Polish army under the agreement signed in November 2013 with the Federal Ministry of Defence of Germany will equip the 11 Lubusz Armored Cavalry Division in Sagan, Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said during a press conference Monday (Jan. 27) in Zielona Gora.
The agreement, signed on 22 November 2013 by the Polish and German ministers of defense - Thomas Siemoniakiem and Thomas de Maizière -- concerns 119 Leopard tanks, including 105 of the 2A5 version and 14 of the 2A4 14 version, as well as approximately 200 pieces of related support and security equipment.
These will include:
- BPZ-2 Bergepanzer armored recovery vehicles;
- MB 250 GD Wolf passenger cars;
- DB 1017 A medium-capacity high mobility cars;
- DB U-1300L light duty high mobility vehicles;
- Deep fording equipment for Leopard 2 tanks;
- AGDUS laser firing simulators for Leopard 2A5 tanks;
- Machine guns and radios to equip 2A4/2A5 Leopard tanks and armored tractors BPZ-2 Bergepanzer.
The contract is worth approximately 180 million euros.
Schedule delivery of equipment:
- The end of 2014 – 91 main battle tanks (77 Leopard 2A5s and 14 Leopard 2A4s);
- The end of 2015 - 28 main battle tanks Leopard 2A5s and the remaining military equipment.

The sale of the Leopard-2 tanks was billed as one of the biggest deals for the German armaments industry, Bild reported.
But Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel, a Social Democrat in the left-right “grand coalition,” has “positioned himself against a tanks delivery to the autocratic royal house,” it said, citing government sources.
“Without agreement from the economy minister, the deal has no chance,” Bild said.
