Radiozavod unveils PU-12M7 command post variant
A new version of the PU-12M7 (product 9S482M7) mobile automated command post has been developed by Radiozavod based in Penza, Russia.
The development represents the latest step in the evolution of the basic PU-12 (9S482) system, which entered service in 1972 as a regimental missile-artillery air-defence battery command post.
The PU-12M7 is intended to serve as a battery automated command post, controlling short-range air-defence systems such as the Strela-10M2 or M3, ZSU-23-4 Shilka, Osa-AK/AKM, Tor-M1 and Tunguska-M1, or Igla family of manportable air-defence systems.
The original version was based on a BTR-60 8x8 armoured personnel carrier (APC) and relied on data from external radar sources, but the latest variant uses a K1Sh1 wheeled vehicle based on the BTR-80 (GAZ 5903) 8x8 APC and incorporates a telescopic sensor mast.
An SRTR (Stantsiya radiotekhnicseskoy razvedki) passive ESM system and electro-optical unit are located at the masthead, while four static antennas mounted halfway up the mast are for a short-range radar. Each antenna covers a sector, which when combined provide all-round coverage.
A trainable electro-optical unit mounted on the top of the turret contains day and night cameras, providing hemispherical coverage. These vehicle-mounted sensors are particularly useful when engaging small reconnaissance or attack unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats.
The PU-12M7 can control a tactical area out to 100 km, handling information about as many as 99 aerial targets. The operator can simultaneously track up to nine targets.
The command post can accept target data from external surveillance radars, other fire-control systems and radar-equipped air-defence weapons. Communications with assets up to 15 km away can be achieved by wire, with radio being used for ranges out to 40 km.
Sectors can be assigned to the weapon system being controlled, blind arcs or other fire restrictions defined, and targets distributed between the available weapons.
The PU-12M7 based on a BTR-80 can use mast-mounted sensors for local air surveillance
The masthead unit houses a passive ESM system and electro-optical unit, while the fixed antennas for the radar are located further down the mast
