Lockheed Wins $800M Order for F-16 Fighters for Slovakia
http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/rele.....vakia.html
Citat:(EDITOR’S NOTE: Discounting the support part of this contract, the unit cost of each of these fourteen F-16 Block 70 fighters works out to $57.1 million.
By comparison, Bulgaria has been charged $1.26 billion for eight F-16s it is also buying, or a contract unit cost of $157.7 million, albeit with a small weapons and support contract.
There is no obvious explanation for a price that varies by a factor of 1:3 for the same aircraft, ordered at the same time, except that Lockheed charges its direct sales customers as much as the market can bear.
Another possibility is that it offers other inducements to persuade buyers to pay substantially more for its products than other competitors are offering.)
Costly Bulgarian F-16 Purchase Questioned
Citat:The US has welcomed a decision by the Bulgarian government to override a presidential veto and ratify a contract for a $1.26 billion deal to purchase eight new F-16s and supporting equipment that came into effect on Tuesday. The contrasting opinions in the country's highest political echelons, however, remain intact.
A new Member of the European Parliament from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Ivo Hristov, commenting on the US congratulations regarding the aircraft purchase by Bulgaria, has said that Washington's reaction reminded him of the behaviour of a vegetable merchant, who [praised a buyer who paid] too much for the desired item.
"Imagine that you buy a kilo of tomatoes for 20 levs (10 euros), and the merchant, who has never seen such a miracle, praises you for the 'wonderful choice'. Would you be proudly telling your friends about it? Because this is exactly what [Prime Minister Boyko] Borissov is doing, talking about the Americans' appreciation of the F-16 deal", the MEP wrote on Facebook.
The State Department had earlier sent congratulations to the Bulgarian government for purchasing the F-16s. Today, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the fact that the deal took place despite "various nonsense and attempts by opponents to prevent the purchase".

Bulgaria Considering Introducing T-50 Trainer from KAI
Citat:Bulgaria is considering introducing the advanced supersonic trainer T-5 of Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) to strengthen its defense readiness. The country is also considering building a local assembly facility for technology transfer from KAI.
According to industry sources and media outlets on Oct. 15, Krasimir Karakachanov, deputy prime minister and defense minister of Bulgaria, said in an interview with local media outlets that the Bulgarian government is considering introducing the supersonic T-50 Golden Eagle jointly produced by KAI and Lockheed Martin. He added the Bulgarian government is also considering building a T-50 assembly plant, going beyond simply purchasing the trainers.
This means that Bulgaria intends to acquire technology from KAI by producing the trainers locally.
In recent years, Bulgaria has been stepping up efforts to beef up its security and defense capabilities. In this context, the Bulgarian government made a decision to purchase eight units of the F-16 Block 70/72 Fighters from Lockheed Martin last year.
