Vought V-383/384, лаке варијанте морнаричког ловца F-8 Crusader




Citat:Vought’s submission to the OS-130 Day Fighter competition of 1953 was the V-383/-384; needless to say, it was an excellent proposal that yielded one the best fighters of the mid-20th century, the F8U Crusader. In the introduction to its proposal, Vought noted that in the design of a new fighter airplane, two fundamental approaches could be taken, namely: 1) Design the smallest possible airplane to meet the basic specification requirements, or 2) Design the smallest possible airplane around the highest thrust engine available. Since many factors beyond the immediate control of the airframe manufacturer influenced the relative merits of these two design approaches. Chance Vought had from the inception of its studies given equal emphasis to both and submitted two separate and distinct proposals in its V-383 and V-384 airplanes.

The Chance Vought V-383 and V-384 airplanes were designed either to equal or to exceed the requirements of BuAer specification OS-130. Both airplanes were arranged as swept-, variable incidence-, high-wing airplanes with low horizontal tails. The V-383 with a J57-P-(JT3N) engine installed weighed 22,600 pounds at take-off and had a combat speed at 35,000 ft of Mach 1.5. With the advanced J57 engine rating, the V-383 airplane would have a combat speed of Mach 1.7. The J71-A-7 and J73-GE-5 engines could be installed as alternates in the V-383 with resulting lower performance. The V-384 with a J65-W-(TJ31B3) engine installed weighed 17,950 pounds at take-off and had a combat speed at 35,000 feet of Mach 1.25. Based on then-available engine data, the XJ79GE-(X24A) engine installed in the V-384 airplane would give a combat speed of Mach 2.0...

Koncept S-55 na samom začetku. Trebalo je da koristi R-195FS motor sa DS koji bi mu omogućio brzinu do 1,55M. U jednosedoj varjanti to je mogla da bude isplativa varjanta zamene MiG-21. Po brzini inferiorniji, ali po manevarskim sposobnostima bolji izbor.
