Sixty-three years ago today, the Grumman F9F Cougar took flight for the first time. Grumman took the straight-wing Panther and re-designed it with swept wings as Naval Aviators flying the Panther during the Korean War watched swept-wing Sabres and MiG-15s fly and fight at higher speeds than they could reach. Cougars arrived too late to serve over Korea and were eventually replaced by F11F Tigers. Variants were used for photo-reconnaissance as well as two-seat trainers and target drones. Grumman built 1,988 aircraft between 1951 and 1960. The Cougar was the first swept-wing aircraft used by the Blue Angels flight team, from 1955 to 1957.

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress flew for the first time seventy-two years ago today. The Superfortress represented one of the biggest technological leaps ever achieved by one aircraft type. The B-29 was the first pressurized bomber in history and 20,000 pounds of ordnance could be stored in two enormous bomb bays. B-29s "Enola Gay" and "Bockscar" dropped the atomic bombs "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945, bringing World War II to an end. One of the most important tasks of the Superfortress was carrying early X-planes to altitude. The B-29 also fought once more over Korea and was copied by Russia's Tupolev aerospace company as the Tu-4. A total of 3,970 Superfortresses were manufactured.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache flew for the first time on September 30, 1975. The two-seat AH-64 was developed to meet the Army's Advanced Attack Helicopter requirement and became operational in 1986. Design features include two shoulder-mounted General Electric T700 turboshafts as well as crew armor designed to withstand hits from 23-millimeter rounds. Armament includes a 30-millimeter M230 Chain Gun and four underwing hardpoints capable of carrying 76 70-millimeter air-to-ground rockets, 16 AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, or a combination of both. Army AH-64As are being converted to AH-64D Apache Longbows. Longbow Apaches feature the mast-mounted millimeter-wave radar which provides longer-range weapons accuracy and all-weather / night fighting capabilities as well as the ability to detect and track 128 targets simultaneously while engaging the 16 most dangerous ones. A data link allows information to be shared with ground units and other Apache Longbows in the area, allowing them to fire on targets detected by a single helicopter.
