The General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) F-16 Fighting Falcon made its maiden flight 41 years ago today. The F-16 evolved from the Air Force's Lightweight Fighter Program to evaluate the concept of a small and maneuverable fighter. A multi-role fighter aircraft, the Fighting Falcon introduced features such as lightweight computers, wing / fuselage blending and a side-mounted control stick. The F-16 was the first production fighter to incorporate a fly-by-wire flight control system. The Israeli Air Force first used the Fighting Falcon in combat, downing a Syrian Mi-8 helicopter on April 28, 1981. On June 7, 1981, eight Israeli F-16s bombed the Osirak nuclear reactor under construction near Baghdad, Iraq as part of Operation Babylon. During the 1982 Lebanon War, Israeli F-16s were credited with 44 aerial combat victories against Syrian aircraft without a single loss! More Fighting Falcons fought in Operation Desert Storm than any other type of aircraft. There are more than 4,500 F-16s serving in the United States and the air forces of 25 other nations. The Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron have employed the Fighting Falcon since 1983, and the Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program uses the F-16 in an adversary role.

The Northrop Grumman X-47B flew for the first time 4 years ago today. Two X-47B aircraft (Air Vehicle 1 and Air Vehicle 2) are being used as part of the Navy’s Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) program. The objectives of the program are to design a full-size, tailless, aircraft carrier capable low observable aircraft that will integrate seamlessly into the carrier operating environment. The X-47B is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220U engine with a top speed of high subsonic. On May 14,2013, AV-2 completed the first ever carrier-based catapult launch from the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). Less than two months later, on July 10, AV-2 landed on the deck of the USS George H.W. Bush, marking the first time an unmanned aircraft made an arrested landing aboard a modern aircraft carrier. Lessons learned will help reduce risk and cost for the follow-on Unmanned Carrier Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) program.
