Russia Offers Palm Oil Defence Offset to Malaysia
Citat:Russia is committed to drastically increasing its purchase of palm oil from Malaysia, said its top defence procurement official.
The palm oil purchase will entail an offset deal leading to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) disposing of its two squadrons of 18 decommissioned MiG-29N Fulcrum jets.
Russia is already assisting in refurbishing the ageing fleet of 18 Sukhoi Su-30MKM Flankers, via its local partner ATSC Corp, reportedly for RM2.2 billion — thus expanding its serviceability for another 15 years.

Commentary: Plagued by defence budget curbs - the Royal Malaysian Air Force in crisis
Citat:Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s comments that Malaysia has no intent of buying new fighter jets reflects a longstanding challenge of funding the country’s defence spending, says defence commentator Mike Yeo.
Malaysia’s Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad caused something of a stir among defence observers last week when he suggested the country could purchase its next fighter jet from China instead of Europe in retaliation against a European Union plan to curb palm oil use in biofuels.
“We will think of buying airplanes from China or any other country," Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying, regarding the EU’s proposed plan to end the use of palm oil in biofuels on Sunday (Mar 24).
He then appeared to backtrack on those remarks, first by clarifying the next day that it was “only a suggestion” and more interestingly, adding that “we may not buy any jets at all”.
He reinforced this point during his visit to the opening of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exhibition on Tuesday, saying that while Malaysia was interested in buying new aircraft, it was not time to do so yet.
He further added that “the aircraft we bought some time back still can perform well" with proper maintenance.

RMAF Chief Rubbishes Report on Procurement Package for 30 Jets
Citat:Calling it far-fetched, RMAF chief General Tan Sri Affendi Buang denied a foreign media report that the air force would conclude the deal by year-end.
He said there was no such plan to conclude negotiations on the light combat jets by such a time frame.
The New Straits Times learnt the Defence Ministry was looking at a procurement package of possibly up to only RM7 billion, in view of economic constraints.
Affendi said RMAF, via the ministry, was studying the options offered by manufacturers.

Malezija bi da pazari od Kuvajta njihove F/A-18C/D
Citat:The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) plans to acquire used Kuwaiti fighter jets while waiting to purchase new aircraft in the next 10 to 15 years.
RMAF chief General Affendi Buang said Kuwait is planning to phase out its existing fleet of Hornet FA-18C and 18D aircraft as it waits for the delivery of the Boeing Super Hornet aircraft in 2021.
“I think we will grab some of the aircraft to add on to our current fleet, at least while waiting for the new multirole combat aircraft (MRCA) programme, so we have a slightly bigger fleet than what we have today,” he told reporters during a special press conference on the RMAF’s anniversary celebration on June 1.
However, he said talks between the two air forces had yet to start.
