Citat:The United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) Ministry of Defence announced on 16 November that it intends to acquire South Korea's M-SAM air defence system.
It said in a tweet that the M-SAM will be a “qualitative addition” to its existing air defence capabilities and that the deal could be worth as much as USD3.5 billion.
This will make the UAE the first export customer for the M-SAM, which is also known as the Cheongung.
It is a medium-range surface-to-air missile system that was developed to replace South Korea's MIM-23 HAWK systems. A battery consists of a mobile multi-function radar made by Hanwha Systems, a command post vehicle, and typically four launchers, each carrying eight vertically launched missiles in canisters.
The Block II variant's missile has improved manoeuvrability that gives it a ‘hit-to-kill' capability against ballistic missiles.
The first Block II battery entered service with the South Korean air force in November 2020 and passed its final acceptance tests against both aircraft and ballistic targets in July-August, according to South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
Nova verzija M-SAM ili nov sistem, L-SAM, namenjen obaranju balistike na visini do 50-60 km. Testiranje presretaca ove nedelje.
Citat:The South Korean military has been seeking to deploy the interceptor by 2026 as part of the country's multilayered, low-tier missile defense program. The L-SAM is designed to shoot down incoming missiles at altitudes of around 50-60 kilometers.
The launch plan came amid speculation the military could advance the timing for the L-SAM deployment, as a series of North Korean missile launches last month, including a hypersonic missile test, raised questions over the South's interception capabilities.
If deployed, the L-SAM interceptor would form a key part of South Korea's anti-missile program, which includes the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile and a medium-range surface-to-air missile.
The U.S. Forces Korea also runs a THAAD anti-missile battery in South Korea.
South Korea Tests Indigenous Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile Citat:South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has confirmed to Janes that it has test-launched the country's indigenously developed long-range surface-to-air missile (L-SAM) system.
A spokesperson for DAPA said the L-SAM launch took place on 23 February and was overseen by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), a DAPA subsidiary. According to local reports, the launch was conducted from Taean County in the southwest of Seoul.
The DAPA spokesperson did not provide additional details of the launch, which was reportedly conducted to test whether the L-SAM system can launch missiles on an intended trajectory and at precise targets.
Citat:The former is expected to have a range of 150 km and be capable of intercepting missiles at altitudes between 40 and 100 km. The aircraft interceptor is intended for use against high-flying aircraft to ranges of 150 km. It will be powered by a dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motor.
According to the ADD, an L-SAM battery will consist of a multifunction radar, a command-and-control (C2) centre, a combat control station, and four truck-mounted launchers: two for the new anti-aircraft and two for the new anti-ballistic missiles.
