Citat:The BetAB 500 ShP (БЕТАБ 500 ШП) Concrete Piercing bomb is a modern design, parachute retarded, thick cased High Explosive blast and fragmentation bomb designed to penetrate re-enforced targets such as bunkers then explode to produce destructive effect through blast overpressure and the fragmentation of the casing.

The bomb casing is considerably thicker than the FAB or OFAB types with the thickness at the thinnest point near the tail cone being about 25mm increasing to 35mm near the center.

The BetAB series has only provision for a tail inertia impact fuze, the nose section being solid and considerably re-enforced to help it to penetrate hard targets.

The BetAB 500Sh P differs from the earlier BetAB 500 bomb in that it has a parachute retarding mechanism in the tail and a rocket motor.

When the bomb is dropped from the aircraft the parachute is deployed, at the same time igniting a short delay.

After a few second the delay element ignites the rocket motor which blows off the complete tail unit, (including the parachute) and drives the bomb into the ground (or hardened re-enforced target) where the inertia impact fuze functions after a delay of less than a second and causes the bomb to explode. The rocket motor has one large central venturi surrounded by 10 smaller venturies .

There are four fins welded onto the tail section.

The tail section is parallel sided at the end but tapers in at the point at which the tail is secured to the body.

The nose section is a long conical ogive shape ending at a flat point.

The bomb has two centrally located suspension lugs and will be found fitted with a tail fuze only.

The charge to weight ratio of the bomb is approximately 20/80.

JASSMs To Equip Polish F-16s
