Two amphibious assault ships are to be mothballed under government plans to make up for a severe sailor shortage in what critics have described as “the beginning of the end for the Royal Marines”.
HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark could be retired from active service under plans put forward by Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, according to The Times.
The plans would be designed to help deal with the manpower crisis in the Royal Navy, freeing up more than 200 sailors for other ships - most likely the force's new fleet of Type 26 frigates when they come into service.
But the move has been slammed by critics who say the ships are crucial to the functioning of the elite commando force, with experts saying their retirement would weaken the Marines by diminishing their ability to storm beaches from the sea.
It comes after reports that the Royal Navy is allegedly decommissioning HMS Westminster and HMS Argyll - with former First Sea Lord Admiral Lord West saying this week that Britain's warships were 'dropping like flies'.

Britain's Armed Forces recruitment effort is in crisis because Generation Z is not signing up to serve, a former defence secretary has warned.
Speaking to LBC's Nick Ferrari, Ben Wallace, who stepped down as defence secretary in August last year, said Britain needed to increase the number of younger people joining the Armed Forces.
The former Army officer said the military needs more money spent on it, but added: "We also need to do some things differently."
"Armed forces across the West, not just Britain, across Europe, America, have a recruitment challenge," he added.
Mr Wallace went on to say: "Generation Z is not joining the Armed Forces in the way my generation did.
"And, post-Covid, skill shortages in engineering and all sorts of things are a real challenge."
Mr Wallace's comments come after the First Sea Lord last year admitted the Royal Navy was struggling to recruit young people who need "permanent connectivity" with their friends and family - and Generation Z was too hooked on smartphones to sign up as submariners.

regrutovanje vrse privatne kompanije, pa je ceo proces dug, traje mesecima, zasto bi neko mesecima cekao dal ce ga primiti ili ne.
plate su male, narocito u mornarici narocito kad su uzme u obzir da se moras zlopatiti po morima mesecima dok ti je porodica sama kuci.
i onda odes lepo kod nekog privatnika gde si i bolje placen i kuci si.
lako je ministrima pametovati (kao i svugde drugde sto rade i okrivljuju sve i svasta samo sebe ne spominju), ali gledajuci kakvo im je stanje u vojsci, vise su za to krivi bas vladajuci sa svojim "reformama" nego narod koji ne zeli da se muci radi toga.
