Citat:South Korea on Thursday unveiled a locally made interceptor missile designed to counter North Korean ballistic missiles and fighter jets.
The new Iron Hawk-II surface-to-air missile, with a range of up to 40 kilometres (24 miles), was displayed at a ceremony in the Agency for Defence Development headquarters in the central city of Daejeon, the agency said.
It said that 15 local companies were involved in the project, which began in 2006.
The Iron Hawk-II can intercept air-to-surface guided missiles, the agency said, and can attack multiple targets with a single radar system more accurately than other guided weapons in operation.
The new missile proves that South Korea's technology in guided weapons is "on a par with other advanced nations", it said in a statement.
South Korea has developed various missiles to counter threats from North Korea.
The North has about 600 Scud missiles capable of hitting targets in South Korea, and possibly also of reaching Japanese territory, according to South Korean military data.
Another 200 Rodong-1 missiles could could reach Tokyo, while the North has also conducted three test launches of intercontinental Taepodong missiles.

S. Korea to buy two spy planes from France
Citat:South Korea will buy two French spy planes capable of intercepting radio messages from North Korea and detecting its missile launches, a state agency said Monday.
The Falcon 2000 reconnaissance planes will be purchased from defence firm Dassault, probably in 2017, the Defence Acquisition Programme Administration said in a statement.

South Korea launches helicopter procurements
Citat:South Korea has formally begun the process to procure new heavy attack and maritime helicopters, with an RfP expected to be issued in coming weeks.
According to documents released on the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) website on 9 January, the organisation is seeking bidders for a new heavy attack helicopter (AH-X) for the army and a ‘maritime operations helicopter’ for the ROK Navy.

Citat:South Korea’s arms procurement agency will approve a plan to buy four aerial refueling tankers next month, according to a spokesman.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) allocated 6.9 billion won ($6.5 million) in next year’s budget to start the tanker project, the agency said on Thursday in a report to the National Assembly for parliamentary inspection.
“If approved, we will open a bid for the aerial tanker program next February,” DAPA spokesman Baek Yoon-hyung said. “Evaluations are scheduled proceed from March to May, with the goal of selecting a successful bidder by the end of next year.”
The South Korean Air Force wants to receive four tankers from 2017 to 2019.
The Airbus Military’s A330 and Boeing’s KC-46 are expected to compete for the contract, valued $940 million or more.
