Citat:The An-72 and An-74 get their nickname, Cheburashka, from the large engine intake ducts, which resemble the oversized ears of the popular Soviet animated character of the same name.
Prvi prototip je poleteo 31.avgusta 1977.godine,a 1985.godine usao je u serijsku proizvodnju.Rusko vazduhoplovstvo je An-72 koristilo za prevoz visih oficira u posebne jedinice.Za pogranicne jedinice je napravljen An-72 za osmatranje akvatorija i opremljen je uredjajima za satelitsku i inercijalnu navigaciju,televizijskim i aero-foto kamerama.Nosi kontejner sa dvocevnim topom GS-23 i borbenim kompletom od 250 granata.Na dva potkrilna nosaca moze da ponese klasicne avio-bombe mase do 500 kg ili lansere NRZ.Misija An-72P se sastojala u petostnom patroliranju na visini od 1.000m,pri brzini krstarenja od 295-350km/h.Civilna varijanta pod nazivom An-74 razvijena je za traganje i spasavanje.
