NATO retires second E-3A to ‘boneyard’ Citat:NATO has retired into storage its second Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft, the US Air Force’s (USAF’s) 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group announced on 13 December.

Citat:The United Kingdom must hold a fair and open competition before selecting any new surveillance aircraft to replace its current Boeing E-3D Sentry airborne warning and control system (AWACS), the country’s parliament has said.
The intervention by the Defence Committee followed earlier media reports that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had already decided to procure the Boeing E-737 Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft to replace the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) increasingly unserviceable and expensive E-3Ds.

Boeing has lost the contract to upgrade E-3’s radar Citat:Bloomberg has reported that Boeing has lost the $76 million contract to upgrade the radar for the U.S. Air Force’s E-3 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.
The U.S. Air Force says Boeing required several additional years and an additional $60 million to finish the project. The service’s Life Cycle Management Center decided to terminate the contract in May. It will now seek to upgrade the radar’s processor instead.

Upgrades include five full-color digital displays in each aircraft, replacing 1970’s-era dials and provides crewmembers with customizable engine, navigation and radar data. These digital capabilities also allow NATO to consolidate crew responsibilities.
“The Communication Navigation Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) modernization project enables the NATO E-3A fleet to meet current and foreseen European air traffic management requirements,” said Brig. Gen. Mike Hain, general manager, NATO Airborne Early Warning and Control Programme Management Agency.

UK buys E-7 to replace Sentry AWACS Citat:The UK Ministry of Defence today announced signature of a $1.98bn deal to purchase five E-7 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft to replace the RAF’s fleet of E-3D Sentry AEW1s. The aircraft will be similar to the E-7A Wedgetail operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

NATO подпишет контракт с Boeing на $1 млрд Citat:NATO в ближайшее время планирует подписать контракт на $1 млрд с компанией Boeing на модернизацию своего флота из 14 самолетов дальнего радиолокационного обнаружения Boeing E-3 Sentry/AWACS для продления срока их службы до 2035 года. Об этом заявил генсек NATO Йенс Столтенберг в среду по прибытии на встречу министров иностранных дел NATO, сообщает ТАСС.
"Да, я могу подтвердить, что мы подпишем контракт по модернизациии и улучшению нашего флота "Авакс" объемом $1 млрд. Кроме того, мы должны задуматься о необходимости замен в будущем наших AWACS, в 2035 году", - заявил он. Все самолеты AWACS NATO были произведены в 70-80-х годах прошлого столетия.
