It's been a while since I posted so here is update. I retired Galeb 23196, originally YU-YAC from air racing and now restoring for air show and display. I have also acquired Galeb 23172 on display at Air Combat Museum Springfield, IL USA and will restore flying this year. Due to canopy breaking, we have made an accurate new forward canopy and now have correct canopy mold, will be doing rear canopy later this year.
Since our first repaint of 23196 was not good, will paint again. Original 23196 had a green/gray/blue similar some photos of YU-YAB and some later J-21. The green was "greener" (see pics 1 and 2), different from 23172 which has original paint as delivered to US 1990 (pic 3) where green is more brown, maybe earlier color. The serial number on the fin is also different. Anyone know the colors for 23196 as it was at Biggin Hill, UK 1999, or have original color samples? Some modelers state the Yugoslav Air Force used British Standard Colors for all aircraft. We are unable to confirm this or match 23196 to BS381. Maybe colors are local produced or another standard. Lift Here and Aeropoxy have some color profiles but again we are unsure of accuracy or timeframe represented. Looks like paint and stenciling changed maybe around late 1990s.
Any thoughts or assistance is appreciated to keep these original and flying.
Both planes (172,458) in these photos are not original as they left the Soko factory
172 has a "Moma" overhaul sign from the period before 1992 (probably overhauled in the 80s)
458 was also overhauled in Moma, but during the 90s
Shades varied, especially after the 90s.Probably depending on the paint manufacturer. It's the same with camouflage
It would be ideal to find a photo reference of the 196 from the time you want to paint and mark it

Sokojet
If you want the old markings(SFRY)and paint scheme, maybe 172 is the best benchmark for you
It was probably arranged in Moma according to the regulations and then sold(shortly before the collapse of the SFRY)
