The end of recce Phantoms in Japan
Citat:In the afternoon of Monday 9 March 2020, 501 Hikotai flew its last operational RF-4 Phantom missions. The final flights were performed by a mix of four RF-4E and RF-4EJ aircraft. The last Phantom landing happened to be the first ever recce Phantom of the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF), serial 47-6901. This oldy, now in the blue camo colours, was given a water salute by the fire brigade at Hyakuri airbase. After some official formalities with squadron flags etc, all the unit’s aircraft were towed into the hangar.
This is the end of 45 years of recce Phantom operations by 501 Hikotai and possibly also means the official end of the unit after 59 years of service. A grand total of 29 recce Phantoms operated with the unit (14 RF-4E and 15 RF-4EJ) and only two aircraft were lost in crashes.
