USN's Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship completes final contract trials

Citat:A US Navy (USN) Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) has completed the Independence class' first 'final contract trials', officials announced on 6 June.

USS Coronado (LCS 4), the second aluminium trimaran LCS variant built by Austal USA, passed the four-day trial, which included at-sea demonstrations of the vessel's main propulsion plant, combat systems, 57 mm gun, and boat handling systems.

LCS to Conduct Test of Norwegian Missile

Citat:The US Navy confirmed this week that the Coronado is scheduled to test-launch the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM) off Point Mugu, California, where the Naval Air Warfare Center maintains an extensively-instrumented missile range.
Citat:“The planned September live-firing demonstration aboard USS Coronado (LCS 4) of the Naval Strike Missile under the Foreign Comparative Testing Program will test the ship’s feasibility to execute an increased anti-surface warfare role,” Lt. New Littoral Combat Ships Are Rolling Out

Citat:Both builders of the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships are busy cranking out new hulls, aiming at what could be a banner year for the program in 2015.
On August 5 in Mobile, Alabama, Austal USA rolled the Independence-class MONTGOMERY (LCS out of its building shed onto a barge, which was then moved up the Mobile River to transfer the ship to a floating drydock. The LCS was launched the following day when the drydock was taken to deeper water and flooded.
Up in Marinette, Wisconsin, Lockheed Martin’s shipbuilding partner at Fincantieri Marinette Marine rolled the Freedom-class DETROIT (LCS 7) from its building shed into launch position on June 27. The launch, though, won’t take place until sometime this fall. Marinette is one of the few builders to use the sideways launch method – certainly the most spectacular launch process.
Each shipyard plans to deliver two ships to the Navy in 2015, making the first time four LCSs will be delivered in one year.

Up Gunned LCS Hulls Picked for Navy’s Next Small Surface Combatant

Citat:The Navy will beef up the weapons, armor and sensors on its two existing classes of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) in an answer to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s call for a tougher Small Surface Combatant (SSC), the Navy announced in a late Thursday briefing with reporters.

The two variants of the ship will replace the last 20 ships in the initial plan for 52 Flight 0 Lockheed Martin Freedom-class and Austal USA Independence-class LCS hulls as part of the SSC directive the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) outlined to the Navy in a January memo.

Citat:Chief Pentagon Weapon Tester Dr. Michael Gilmore remains fundamentally dissatisfied with the survivability of the Navy’s littoral combatant ship (LCS) and its upgraded follow-on, the small surface combatant (SSC).
In an emailed statement described in a January 8th Bloomberg article, Dr. Gilmore stated, “Notwithstanding reductions to its susceptibility” compared with the design of the first 32 ships, “the minor modifications to the LCS will not yield a ship that is significantly more survivable.”

Elsewhere in the shipbuilding budget, 14 littoral combat ships (LCS) are planned, with the first two modified littoral frigates scheduled for 2019. The newly updated ship construction program includes a new carrier in 2018, the LHA 8 assault ship in 2017, a new LXR) amphibious transport dock replacement ship in 2020, an afloat forward staging base ship in 2017, and a new class of fleet tugs, with the first of five coming in 2017.
