Prvi let prototipa Ecureuil(veverica) izveden je 27.06.1974.godine.Pocetna varijanta je bio AS 350B sa motorom Turbomeca Arriel 1B.Dvomotorni AS 355Ecureuil 2 poleteo je septembra 1974.godine.Vojne varijante su AS550A2-naoruzan topom ili NRZ,AS550C2-namenjen za protivoklopnu borbu,AS550U2-za vezu,AS550S2-protivbrodski mornaricki helikopter,AS550M2-visenamenski palubni helikopter,AS555SR-koristi ga francuska mornarica i isti je opremljen radarom Benedix-1500 sa zonom osmatranja od 360 stepeni,detektorom magnetnih anomalija i moze poneti dva samonavodjena torpeda Mk.44/46 ili Murene,AS555AN/UN francuska Kov koristi za obuku i borbu protiv helikoptera,AS355F1 francuski Kov je naoruzao sa topom GIAT M621 kalibra 20mm,koji je pricvrscen na desni bok i isti sluzi za obezbedjenje francuskih strategijskih baza.
Brazilska kompanija "Helibras" sklapa jednomotorne i dvomotorne helikoptere Ecureuil koji nose lokalno ime Esquilo.RM Brazila koristi naoruzanu varijantu sa mitraljezima FN kalibra 7,62mm i NRZ kalibra 70mm.

Higher gross weight version powered by one Arriel 1D1 engine over the B1 version with aerodynamic strake fitted to tail boom along the starboard side and angled engine exhaust duct for better yaw control.
AS350 B3
High-performance version, is powered by an Arriel 2B engine equipped with a single channel (DECU) Digital Engine Control Unit with a mechanical backup system. This helicopter is the first ever to land on Mount Everest. AS350 B3/2B1 variant introduces enhanced engine with dual channel (FADEC) Full Authority Digital Engine Control, dual hydraulics and a 2,370 kg (5,225 lb) Maximum Take Off Weight. AS350 B3e (introduced late 2011) equipped with the Arriel 2D engine.
AS350 BA
Powered by a Arriel 1B engine and fitted with wider chord AS355 main rotor blades and tail rotor servo.

AS350 B2 variant selected to meet rotary-wing training needs of UK MoD, through its Defence Helicopter Flying School in 1996. Powered by a derated Arriel 1D1 engine to improve the helicopters' life cycle.

AS550 Fennec/ AS555 Fennec 2
Laki visenamenski vojni helikopter napravljen na platformi AS350 Ecureuil/AS355 Ecureuil 2.Moze se naoruzati topom 20 mm Giat M621 i mitraljezima 7.62mm ili 12.7 mm,kao i NRZ 7 x 2.75in(Forges de Zeebrugge) ili 12 x 68 mm(Thales Brandt),takodje mogu nositi i protivoklopne rakete BGM-71 TOW.

Korisnici:Francuska,Kolumbija,Argentina,Danska,Malezija,Meksiko,Pakistan
Najnoviji korisnik je Tajland koji je narucio 6kom,a u novembru 2013 su im isporucili prva dva.
