Slovenia weighs up Boxer mortar variant

Citat:Fresh from announcing its intention to purchase the Boxer 8x8 armoured vehicle, Slovenia has revealed an additional requirement for several 120mm mortar carrier variants of the German vehicle.
In February, the central European country announced that it would purchase enough Boxers to equip a Medium Infantry Battalion Group, with the Slovenian MoD subsequently putting this number at 48.
In response to questions from Shephard, the Slovenian MoD stated that the Medium Infantry Battalion Group will have an additional eight vehicles configured as mortar carriers to take the total vehicle number acquired to 56.
This means Slovenia will be the first country to operate a mortar variant of the Boxer and only the second country after Lithuania to acquire an IFV model.
The other 48 vehicles for Slovenia will all be configured with a 30mm weapon system and 7.62mm machine gun, the MoD said.
This is likely to be ‘similar to Lithuanian IFV configurations’, according to a spokesperson from the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR), the intergovernmental organisation that runs the Boxer programme.
The Lithuanian Boxers – expected to be delivered next year – will come equipped with an unmanned Samson Mk2 30mm turret developed by Israeli manufacturer Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
The OCCAR spokesperson confirmed that while development work had been completed, the mortar variant was ‘not fully developed’.
It is not known how this could affect the timeline for acquiring these specialist variants. The Slovenia government expects the first vehicles to be delivered either at the end of 2019 or in 2020, although that depends on when Slovenia joins OCCAR and when a contract is signed.
‘The timing of the contract signature cannot be planned only by Slovenia as it depends on our accession and the progress of the process governing our accession to the Boxer Programme,’ said the MoD.
‘In our estimation, if no major difficulties arise during the technical and commercial negotiation process, the contract is expected to be signed in the course of the last months of 2018.’
Slovenia’s accession to OCCAR as the fourth participating state in the Boxer programme – alongside Germany, the Netherlands and Lithuania – is also likely to take place at the end of this year.
According to OCCAR, there was a ‘kick off meeting’ between Slovenian and Boxer programme representatives from manufacturer ARTEC on 13 March in Bonn.
Last month, both Australia and the UK announced that they had also selected the Boxer 8x8 for respective programmes in their countries. The UK will meet its Mechanised Infantry Vehicle requirement with Boxer while Australia selected the German vehicle for its Land 400 Phase 2 initiative.
