Air Force officials: New planes, more troops needed to confront China, Russia

Citat:U.S. Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and chief of staff Gen. David Goldfein has unveiled an initiative, titled “The Air Force We Need,” on Sept. 17.The new strategy calls for the service to gain 74 combat squadrons in order to deal with threats from China and Russia.
“The Air Force is too small for what the nation is asking us to do,” Wilson said. “We have 312 squadrons today. Our analysis says that we need 386.”
She added that five more bomber squadrons are needed, there are now nine.

U.S. Air Force awards contract to Gentex for laser eye protection

Citat:The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced on 28 September that it had awarded a $98,3 million contract to the Gentex Corp. contract for laser eye protection.
According to the DoD’s statement, this contract provides for the development, manufacture, and delivery of different variants or form factors of laser eye protection to be used for the purpose of protecting aircrew against emerging laser threats.

Citat:The five existing category-1 issues are:
• Visibility problems with the tanker’s remote vision system, or RVS, which Boeing is hoping to resolve via a software fix.
• Scraping of the receiver aircraft by the KC-46 boom, which Boeing and the Air Force believe will be resolved once the RVS is corrected.
• A mechanical lock on the centerline drogue system sometimes inadvertently disconnects during a refueling. Boeing plans to fix this with a software update.
• The flight control stick sometimes induces loads on the boom while it is in contact with a receiver aircraft and does not convey that information to the boom operator.
• The boom of the aircraft is sometimes too stiff during some portions of the refueling process.
The Air Force and Boeing have not announced how they will try to resolve the latter two deficiencies.
